Metallization
Wiring the transistors together with layers of metal interconnect.
What you’ll learn
- What interconnect does
- The damascene copper process
- Why many metal layers exist
Why it matters
Transistors are useless until connected; interconnect increasingly limits performance.
Explanation
Metallization builds the wiring that links transistors into circuits. Modern chips use copper deposited into etched trenches and vias (the damascene process), separated by insulating dielectric, then planarised by CMP.
Advanced chips stack 10–20+ metal layers, from fine local wires to thick global power lines.
Visual explanation
Key terminology
- Interconnect
- The metal wiring linking devices.
- Via
- A vertical connection between metal layers.
- Damascene
- Filling etched trenches with copper, then polishing back.
Example
A signal may travel up through several vias and metal layers to cross the chip.
Common mistakes
Watch out for:
- Assuming wiring is an afterthought — interconnect delay and power are first-order concerns.
Real-world application
Interconnect resistance/capacitance (RC delay) is a major limiter at advanced nodes.
