Signoff
The final checks that confirm the design is correct and manufacturable.
What you’ll learn
- What signoff verifies
- DRC and LVS
- Timing/power signoff
Why it matters
Signoff is the last gate before committing millions to manufacturing.
Explanation
Signoff runs exhaustive checks: design-rule checking (DRC) confirms the layout obeys the foundry's rules; layout-versus-schematic (LVS) confirms the layout matches the netlist; static timing analysis confirms speed; plus power, IR-drop, and reliability checks.
Only after clean signoff does the design go to tapeout.
Visual explanation
Key terminology
- DRC
- Design-rule check against foundry rules.
- LVS
- Layout-versus-schematic comparison.
- STA
- Static timing analysis.
Example
A DRC violation (two wires too close) must be fixed before tapeout.
Common mistakes
Watch out for:
- Skipping a signoff corner — a missed case can cause silicon failure.
Real-world application
Foundries supply the rule decks that signoff tools check against.
